Welcome to New Richmond Lady Lions basketball!

There were no lazy, hazy days of summer for New Richmond's basketball players, spent more time under gym lights than the outdoor sun.

Girls varsity coach Brad Hatfield passed on summer team camps to make the most of his Ohio High School Athletic Association allotted 10 offseason coaching days.

In addition to summer condidtioning, Hatfield had his girls playing in open gym two days a week at New Richmond and playing in a summer league at Ripley High School two days a week and using his 10 coaching days sparingly.

"A couple of our parents coached them in the summer league since I can't have any contact with them in those games," said Hatfield, who has been impressed with what he's seen from three sophomores to be in guards Mikaela Rupp and Savannah Glenn and center Georgia Buckingham.

Missing from the summer workouts was forward Reno Frayne, the team's top returning player who is recovering from knee surgery.

"Reno is still rehabbing the knee and won't be able to practice until the fall," said Hatfield. "I'm optimstic she'll make a full recovery."
