Lions rally to beat Bethel 28-13

The Lions roared back from a 13-0 halftime deficit and dominated Bethel in the second half for a 28-13 win in their SBAAC opener Sept. 11 at Bethel.

After being held to only 4 first downs and 49 yards total offense in the first half, the Lions scored on their first three possessions of he second half and dominated Bethel on defense.

"We came out flat," said Lions head coach Dan Scholz after the game. "We just didn't come out to play in the first half."

There was no panic at halftime despite the score and the flat offensive performance in the first half.

"Coach Warden (NR offensive coordinator Chuck Warden) talked to the offensive guys and said 'We're not changing anything. We are going to go out and do what we do and be who we are,' " noted Scholz.

Mike Maupin scored on the Lions' first possession of the second half on a 14-yard run with 7:59 left in the third quarter to cap a 9-play, 60-yard drive.

Quarterback Garrett Myers scored on the first play of New Richmond's next possession after a 23-yard punt return by Nick Hill to the Bethel 32.

Myers scored again on a 1-yard run to cap a 7-play, 62-yard drive to start the fourth quarter and Andrew Nealan added the final score on a 1-yard run late in the quarter.

"Our gameplan was good and we just had to execute. We just had to man up a little bit and block. We made few adjustments. We just went out and played."

Bethel's scores came on a 13-yard halfback pass from Kameron Wilson to Garrett Lang and a 77-yard TD pass from David Willenbrink to Spencer Sutter after the New Richmond defender fell down going for the interception.

The Lions host 1-2 Williamsburg on Friday.
