| New Richmond's Alex Lewis, second from the right, proudly signs with the Division I collegiate swim team at Cleveland State University.. Lewis was joined by, from left, Lion swim coaches Judy Middeler, Joe Middeler and his mother Becky Lewis for the occasion. Alex also considered swimming at either Wright State or Eastern Michigan. "Cleveland State was the best fit for me. I love the campus and the program," Alex said. |
Lewis recently committed to Cleveland State and swam in both the 100-yard butterfly and 100 freestyle at the Division II State Championships as a junior.
In the 100 freestyle, Lewis took ninth place at state with a time of 48.07. Lewis finished the 100 butterfly in 12th place at state while posting a time of 52.56.
"Our seniors have done a great job and they talked some of their classmates into joining," Middeler said of the bolstered numbers. "I think Alex making state and one of our relays qualifying for districts played a big part too."
The Lions' 200 medley relay qualified for districts. Lewis, senior Mark Miller and junior Robbie Workman all return for the relay after setting a school record at 1:50.19 last winter, Middeler said.
