Sue Curfman is filling in for Lions varsity coach Carla Corbin who is on maternity leave.

"Carla will be back next year and I'll go back to JV next year," said Curfman. "That's the plan."

Curfman's immediate plan is to turn the Lady Lions into winners and in volleyball that means strong arms and shoulders.

"We started conditioning in July and did a camp and a lot of open gyms," said Curfman. "Once coaching started in August we've spent the first hour of practice exercising -- working arms and working shoulders every day."

Seniors Kate Schumacher, Mercedes Featherkile, Myla Gordo, Briana Rose and Brittney Strunk provide a lot of experience for the Lady Lions. They are joined on the varsity by juniors Lindsey Blankenship and Brittney Strunk and sophomore Sarah Shoemaker.

"“We have a lot of tall girls and they have really been working hard on getting stronger," said Curfman. "The girls are pretty excited about starting the season."

The Lady Lions open the season with road matches at Deer Park, Goshen and Clermont Northeastern before their home opener Sept. 5 with a tri-match featuring Mariemont and Batavia.

Lady Lions volleyball coach Sue Curfman

Sue Curfman, the Lady Lions JV and assistant varsity coach the past four years, moves up to the varsity this year while head coach Carla Corbin is on maternity leave.

In addition to her volleyball coaching duties at New Richmond, Coach Curfman serves as the New Richmond Middle School Athletic Assistant and in-school suspension supervisor.

A former high school volleyball player, Coach Curfman has coached girls' recreational soccer and softball for many years.

Jamie Kipfer, a math teacher at New Richmond high school, will coach the JV this season.

New Richmond High School is located in New Richmond, Ohio, 15 minutes East of Cincinnati and on the beauriful Ohio River. The Lions are members of the Southern Buckeye Academic and Athletic Conference and play in Ohio High School Athletic Association Div. II in volleyball.
