Andrew Nealan tries for state three-peat
Senior Andrew Nealan will try to become the first three-time state qualifier in New Richmond's wrestling history when he leads a Lions team determined to regain its position as the top program in the Southern Buckeye Conference in the 2009-10 season.
Nealan finished sixth in the 2009 state tournament and Lions coach Deron Shinkle sees him moving up on the podium in the 2010 tournament.
"We’ve never had a three-time state qualifier before," said Shinkle. "Andrew’s chances of moving up the podium from his 6th place finish in 2009 are good."
"The top six spots (at the state) are all close," said Shinkle. "Even the matches Andrew lost last year at the state tournament were very close. The one for fifth-sixth place, he lost by a point and the other one he lost was by three or four points. It’s just a matter of another takedown here or there would have given him the match."
Missing from the Lions roster this year will be Bryan Martineck who joined Nealan as a state qualifier at 171 pounds in 2009.
However, Nealan could have company again if he becomes a three-time state qualifier.
"I think Brian Gelter (215 pounds) has a chance at qualifying this year," said Shinkle.
Gelter, a senior, finished second in the 2009 sectionals when he had to forfeit the championship match due to injury.
In addition to Nealan and Gelter, the 2009-10 Lions will have juniors Zack Gelter (no relation to Brian) at super heavyweight and Sam Anderson at 103 pounds. Anderson, who wrestled with a broken finger, was a second place finisher in the sectionals.
In between Shinkle is counting on a strong group of sophomores and juniors to help the Lions return to domiance in the SBAAC.
"Last year we had a lot of depth at the lower weights and hopefully they’ll space themselves out this year," said Shinkle.
After dominating the SBAAC and Division II sections in 2008, the Lions were hit by a rash of injuries which saw them drop to second in the SBAAC to Blanchester and third in the sectionals behind Wilmington and Little Miami in 2009.
" We were never full strength, not a bit," said Shinkle. "We were close at sectional time but we probably still had three kids that were out of the lineup that were district qualifiers the year before."
