Future of G.A.T.E.S. Discussion 1 with Mr. Bird

Many parents were able to join us for this discussion time with our District Superintendent, Mr. Adam Bird.  A general overview of the budget situation was discussed, and an extended question-and-answer period took place.  Mr. Bird agreed to meet again with the G.A.T.E.S. parents at the May Parent Information Night to further discuss the situation and its progress.  That meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 11th at 6:00 pm at New Richmond Elementary.  The room number is TBA.

Intensities, Sensitivities, and Overexcitabilities

The most universal characteristic of gifted children and adults is... intensity.  We had some excellent discussions as parents explored the five types of intensities from Dabrowski's Overexcitabilities.  Please click here for the information that participants assembled into a flipbook for future reference.

Summer Enrichment Opportunities for Your Family

To wrap up the 2009-2010 school year, many parents were able to join us for some great giveaways (to make their summer excursions easier), tons of information (packets of ideas for staycations, daycations and vacations) and to hear some great guest speakers, Laura Hoevener and Terri Weeks, authors of Adventures Around Cincinnati!  They left with lots of ideas and goodies to keep their kids occupied, connecting learning, and having fun all summer long.

Giftedness: Perfectionism, Underachievement, and "Boredom"

Parents who were able to attend the third round of Parent Information Nights were greeted by some picture books to peruse, which touched on the subjects of perfectionism, underachievement, and/or motivation.  A K'NEX challenge was then issued and later discussed via the "achievement spectrum". Large- and small-group conversations about perfectionism, underachievement, motivation, and "boredom" ensued.  Partial packets are available online, or please contact us for more information.  This session seemed to be extremely helpful for those in attendance; please consider joining us for our next round of parent information nights!

Parent Information Night - November 5th and 9th, 2009

An Overview of the Characteristics of Gifted Children

At the second round of Parent Information Nights, attendees participated in discussions surrounding the social, emotional, and cognitive needs of gifted students.  The goal of the evening was to stress that gifted children tend to be different from other students, and that learning more about them will allow for a better parent/child relationship and healthy growth of the child.  (In no way are we indicating that gifted children are more difficult to raise than other children, they just tend to have common and specific needs.)  The first item that parents discussed were Myths and Facts surrounding gifted children and their needs (all on the list are facts, by the way).  A Parent Survival Kit was distributed and discussed, and parents connected with each other to offer suggestions and problem-solve together.  Finally, information was disseminated which explained characteristics and concomitant problems that may arise for gifted individuals.  Parents continued to discuss this information and find that which was pertinent for their own situation.
