Gifted and talented students need differentiated curriculum and instruction and support services in order to fully develop their cognitive, academic, creative and artistic abilities or to excel in a specific content area.  Students in New Richmond Exempted Village Schools who are identified as gifted receive services which are dependent upon the grade level of the student and his or her specific needs.  The district employs gifted intervention specialists, which are placed at the buildings equally, and services are maintained at each building in accordance with the district service plan.

Whole-grade acceleration, subject acceleration, early entrance to kindergarten, or early graduation may be utilized in cases in which the student’s advanced needs cannot be met in their current grade level.  This may be instituted after the acceleration process has been completed and the acceleration committee has determined the best placement for the student.  Please refer to the district acceleration policy for more information.

Cluster grouping for instruction allows for the gifted and talented students to be served in the regular classroom.  In these cases, the general education teacher or the gifted intervention specialist provides curriculum for students identified as gifted in superior cognitive and/or specific academic areas.  This curriculum is designed to meet the students’ cognitive, social, and emotional needs.

Honors courses and “Advanced Placement” courses, provided under the authorization of the College Board, are offered at the secondary level for students preferring to take advanced coursework.  Additionally, educational options, including mentorship, interdisciplinary curricular experiences, career explorations, and visual and/or performing arts experiences, are provided on an individual basis and are supervised by the gifted coordinator.

For all grade levels, any student who is identified as gifted in the visual and/or performing arts will be provided services by a trained arts instructor.

The G.A.T.E.S. Program is currently staffed by two Gifted Intervention Specialists, who work specifically with students in grades 4-6.
