G.A.T.E.S. Update
May 7, 2007 Mrs. Vicky Phillips – instructor phillips_v@nrschools.org
Welcoming
Springtime
With the beautiful weather that is now here, I hope that your family has had the opportunity to get out and enjoy it. Since summer break is quickly approaching, you may be looking for some enriching opportunities for your students. I have listed some ideas on the GATES website that include things to do in and around Ohio, as well as some links to NAGC (National Association for Gifted Children). Visit www.nrschools.org/lce/GATES.htm and click on “Parents” to see the links.
Research Expos
Fifth and sixth grade students are conducting “Abbreviated Independent Study Projects.” These projects will be displayed at our Research Expos for parents and students to come and explore. The dates and times of the displays are listed below. I hope to see you there!
Locust Corner 5th grade: Monday, May 14, 1:45-3:00 pm, GATES classroom (206)
Locust Corner 6th grade: Tuesday, May 15, 1:45-3:00 pm, GATES classroom, (206)
Monroe 5th & 6th grades: Wednesday, May 16, 9:45-11:00 am, GATES classroom, B190
New Richmond Elementary 5th & 6th grades: Thursday, May 17, 1:45-3:00 pm, Commons
Egg-Cellent Egg-Ventures
This spring, the third and fourth grade students at each school have learned much about eggs. They have decided on a way to share this wealth of knowledge with the other students in the school… and parents too! Please see the following schedule, and I hope to see you at your child’s show. As students are preparing for their presentations, please help them to remember their props, lines, or materials.
Locust Corner Egg-Fest: Tuesday, May 22, 9:45 – 11:00 am, GATES classroom (206)
Monroe Play Life Outside of the Egg: Wednesday, May 16, 2:00 pm
New Richmond Elementary: students will be videotaping a Chickalodeon newscast and will show it to the school. If all goes as planned, they will have a copy to bring home as well!
A Final Note
GATES will conclude for the year after the presentation dates in this newsletter. This year has been a wonderful experience for myself, and I hope for the students as well. I am looking forward to a busy summer, planning for some exciting units for next year. Enjoy the time with your family, continue to encourage your children to explore their interests, and have a great summer!

G.A.T.E.S. Update
Mrs. Vicky Phillips (instructor) – phillips_v@nrschools.org
Volume 1 Edition 1 November 6, 2006
Welcome to G.A.T.E.S.!
It was great to meet many of you at parent-teacher conferences this past week. I am looking forward to seeing you more often and working together to create the best possible educational program for your child.
CityFests and Cultural Extravaganzas
If you have not yet heard, we will be celebrating the end of our first projects next week, during your child’s regular G.A.T.E.S. class time. You are all invited to attend!
I would like to ask, as well, that if you and your child have chosen food samples as one of their projects, that they bring in a minimum of 30 ready-to-serve samples. This will afford us enough samples for the class, as well as any visiting teachers and parents. Thank you in advance! We hope to celebrate with you next week!
SANG
The Southwest Advocacy Network for Gifted (SANG) is holding an organizational meeting on November 15. For more details, see the information on the back of this newsletter.
W.E.P.s
Written Educational Plans (W.E.P.s) are tools to show the needs of your child and the intervention strategies that are in place for this school year. W.E.P.s will be updated each year. Please find a note entitled “Your Child’s W.E.P.” enclosed with the document. I ask that you please sign and return the form as soon as possible, as the classroom teachers and I would like to have these on file for reference. If you have any questions regarding the document, please contact me. Thank you!
Enrichment Ideas for your Child
To extend on your child’s Create-A-City project, choose any city and research it together, plan a daytrip or vacation to a city, or explore a few cities throughout the next couple of months and compare and contrast them.
To extend on our Create-A-Culture project, check out the Cincinnati Museum’s Culture Fests at www.cincymuseum.org. The Latin American Culture Fest is next weekend, and it’s free!
To get some ideas for gifts this holiday season, visit www.nagc.org and read through their annual toy list for high-potential kids. While you’re there, check out some of their other resources.
