Mustafar

Mustafar, the lava planet, was using a variety of techniques. While Star Wars was being made Mt. Etna erupted. Rick McCallum and Ron Fricke went over to Italy to capture images of the eruption to assist making the Mustafar planet.

The incline of the lava river was pretty much built. Wind and smoke machines, plus red-gelled lighting were used to make it seem realer and more dramatic.

The ILM helped greatly with making this fiery planet. They created digital lava that would flow a burst realistically.

Hoth

Hoth was made mainly because of the help from the 6,000 foot tall Härdangerjøkulen Glacier in Finse, Norway. Since Hoth is supposed to be snowy planet so obviously they did not need to make many special effects and changes on this frozen planet, although the cast and crew had to withstand harsh conditions such as avalanches and below zero temperatures. Sometimes, when they needed a more controlled scene they would use a mixture of baking soda and microscopic bubbles.

                                      Endor

Everything filmed for Endor was on Smith River, which is located in Northern California. On Endor there were lots of different animals used to make the different creatures of the Star Wars movie. Some examples are ferrets, llamas, goats, horses, crows and even ducks.

Kamino

This stormy planet, also known as Kamino, was helped greatly by Industrial Light & Magic. They helped Stat Wars create the fantastic water and storm scenes. They buildings and other structures were created on top of the digital sea.

Geonosis

Geonosis, the rock planet, was going to be based on Mars. The structures in the picture above are actually termite mounds close up (they were carved in some, but not much). Sometimes for the background they shot photographs of actual deserts and put those photos there. While in the middle of the huge clone/droid fight the ground, sky, and all structures were created digitally.

Bespin

The giant gas planet, Bespin, was going to have extremely smart inhabitants which were going to ride on flying whales. Although, sad to say, the idea was just too much since the director had too much on his hands. They did not make it in the next movie or the next, but it was finally added in Star Wars Attack of the Clones: Episode II on the planet Kamino.
