2nd ANNUAL “FREEDOM IN ACADEMIA” STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST: The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) is looking for high school seniors to submit well-written essays (700 – 1,200 words) explaining why freedom of speech and First Amendment rights are crucial to higher education. Essays should explain how college administrators betray liberty and violate students’ constitutional rights at American colleges and universities as documented by FIRE in two short documentaries. AXA ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP: Are you active in your community? Have you led a project that benefits others? Have you overcome personal challenges? 2010 JOHN F. KENNEDY PROFILE IN COURAGE ESSAY CONTEST: U.S. high school students are invited to write an original essay on the political courage of a U.S. elected official. First-place winner receives $10,000. Students can access contest and registration information, and submit their essay online at www.jfklibrary.org Deadline for submission is January 9, 2010.
NATIONAL CO-OP SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: The National Commission for Cooperative Education will award 170 merit co-op scholarships of $6,000 each, renewable over four years. These merit co-op scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors who plan to participate in college cooperative education at one of the eight Partner Colleges and Universities. Qualifications: Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale, complete the required admissions application materials, and be accepted for the 2010-2011 academic year at one of the NCCE Partner Colleges. Dr. SEUSS’S OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO! COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship will recognize a high school senior who understands and values the limitless possibilities that education can offer with a $5,000 scholarship award. Students should submit an original literary composition, typed, double-spaced, and no longer than one page (500 words) with a minimum font size of 12 pts.Essay Question: Dr. Seuss’s “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” Delivers an important message about the chances and troubles that life presents. SENIOR HELPERS ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship will be presented to 2 high school seniors in Hamilton, Butler, Warren and Clermont Counties in the amount of $250 each. The scholarship is open to all high school seniors, but will favor those students who volunteer or work in some capacity with seniors. Applications and essays are due by February 15, 2010.
