Emergency responders to hold training Jan. 21 - 23 at old middle school

For three days in January, students and residents living near New Richmond Middle and High Schools might notice higher than usual emergency responder traffic.

The increased activity will be part of an on-duty active shooter training scheduled to occur Tuesday through Thursday, Jan. 21-23 at the former New Richmond Middle School building on Bethel New Richmond Road.

Participating agencies include the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office, Clermont County Emergency Management Agency, Central Joint Fire & EMS, New Richmond Village Police Department, Monroe Township Fire & EMS, Pierce Township Police Department, and Washington Township Fire & EMS.

The training will be conducted as a real-time scenario to better develop officer responses to a real-life active shooter incident, according to the Sheriff’s Office. To reduce the possibility of creating panic to listening ears, officers will be asked by dispatch to respond to the location for a special detail.

Upon arrival, officers' firearms will be secured and they will be presented with an active shooter scenario that is taking place in the school. Officers will have their choice of an airsoft weapon for use during their training.

Superintendent Tracey Miller said he’s pleased the district and local emergency responders can collaborate for this important training in the New Richmond Exempted Village School District. It’s an opportunity for everyone to become better prepared for an emergency situation, especially a worst-case scenario, he said.

The training was developed by the Clermont County School Safety Sub-Committee.
