NRHS Student Wins Voice of Democracy Scholarship

We are proud to announce that New Richmond High School Freshman Tatem Lindner was selected as the Veterans of Foreign Wars youth scholarship winner for one of the twelve VFW districts in the State of Ohio.

The scholarship is named “Voice of Democracy”, and is an audio-essay program that provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. This year’s theme is “My Responsibility to America”. Each year, nearly 40,000 ninth through twelfth grade students from across the country enter to win, with the winner of each state advancing to the National Voice of Democracy Contest.

In order for her to get to the district level, she initially had to place first at New Richmond High School. After that, Tatem had an opportunity to meet with her District VFW and Auxiliary Chairpersons, attend a luncheon, present her speech to the VFW and Auxiliary members, and attend an evening banquet where the were will be announced.

She competed against the other 11 Districts. After a very welcoming experience in Columbus, at the VFW Mid-Winter Conference, Tatem earned a 7th place finish in the Voice of Democracy scholarship competition. She was awarded a $2,000 scholarship. Tatem was one of only two freshmen. In total, there were over 1,400 entries throughout the state of Ohio. Her picture will appear on the State VFW website within the next two weeks, and the VFW District 4 will be recognizing her on March 5th.

Tatem is pictured with her loving family, including her mom and dad (Tracy and Alan) who are both teachers at New Richmond Elementary.

Congratulations, Tatem!
