Kenley Conquers the Classroom

One of the many advantages of an education at New Richmond Exempted Village School District is access to innovative educational tools, and dedicated staff to help make implementation of those tools a success.

Last Fall, Kenley Sandlin, a 4th Grader at Locust Corner Elementary School, was diagnosed with Perthes Disease. Perthes is a rare childhood condition that affects the hip. It occurs when the blood supply to the rounded head of the femur (thighbone) is temporarily disrupted. Without an adequate blood supply, the bone cells die, a process called avascular necrosis.

We recently sat down with Kenley’s mom, Jana Sandlin (who is also a teacher at Locust Corner) and Technology Integrationist Jackie Heinzelmann to find out how Kenley was able to successfully attend classes while recovering from the surgeries required for her condition. We are so proud of Kenley, her parents, and the staff at Locust Corner who truly helped her conquer the classroom.
