Monroe Teachers to Speak at Powerful Reading Interventions Conference

On Saturday, October 21, educators throughout the tri-state area will gather to attend a conference entitled, “Powerful Reading Interventions”. This conference will be sponsored by the College of Mount Saint Joseph and the Southern Ohio branch of the International Dyslexia Association.

In attendance, will be two teachers from our New Richmond Exempted Village School District. Monroe Elementary first grade teacher, Mrs. Gina Tierney, and kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Pam Swan, will be presenting at the conference on the topic of fluency.

“After teaching phonemic awareness and ‘decoding’ words with phonics, fluency – which is the ability to read with the proper speed, accuracy and expression – is the next step in ‘The Big Five’ of reading skills.,” stated Tierney. “In first grade, accomplishing these basics is critical for future reading success in all subjects.”

Both Tierney and Swan are graduate students in the Reading Science program at MSJ. As they further their education and seek to develop themselves professionally for the benefit of the students in our district, they are also eager to share their knowledge and experiences with teachers in the area.

NREVSD is proud of Tierney, Swan, and the countless others within our district who continually go above and beyond for the betterment of our students.
