New Kindergarten Readiness Assessment Ensures a Better Start

At Locust Corner Elementary, we want all youngsters to enjoy school from the day they enter kindergarten. Coming to kindergarten with certain skills already in place makes learning easier for your child. For example, children whose families have read to them and children who can draw some basic letters have an easier time learning to read. That’s important, because reading lays the foundation for learning throughout their school years.

This fall, we will begin using a better way to determine what our kindergarten students know and can do. This more accurate information will help teachers better identify what each student needs to succeed in kindergarten.

Teachers will use Ohio’s new Kindergarten Readiness Assessment to get a snapshot of every child’s knowledge and skills in six areas: social skills, math, science, social studies, language and literacy, physical well-being and motor development.

How the assessment works

The teacher will assess every child in the class. Sometimes the teacher will work with your child alone. Sometimes he or she will observe your child during everyday classroom activities.

In some cases, the teacher will ask your child to answer questions that have only one correct answer. For example, the teacher will read your child a very short story and ask simple questions about the story. At other times, the teacher will look at how well your child can complete an activity, such as sorting shapes.

The results of your child’s assessments will not appear on his or her report card. No score can keep your child from continuing in kindergarten. The results simply help the teacher work more effectively with your student.

Supporting your child in school as he or she takes the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment, and helping with your child’s learning at home, will help us make sure your child has a bright future in school.

New State Tests to Replace Ohio Achievement Assessments

This year, most Ohio students in grades 3-8 will take a new and different set of state achievement tests that are based on Ohio’s New Learning Standards. Both the standards and new tests reflect higher expectations for what students should know and be able to do in math, English language arts, science and social studies. The new tests also will better measure what students have learned and what they can do with their knowledge.

In grades 3-8 math, the new state tests will replace the Ohio Achievement Assessments (OAA).

The new tests also will replace the OAAs in grades 4-8 English language arts. All grade 3 students will take the OAA in reading this fall. Students who reach a promotion score on that test will switch to the state’s new third-grade reading test next spring. Those who do not receive a promotion score will take the OAA in reading again next spring.

The new state tests also replace the grade 5 and 8 science tests and bring back the social studies tests at grades 4 and 6.

Each of these state tests has two parts. The first is performance-based. Students will provide answers and explain how and why they chose them. The second part is an end-of-course exam in which students simply select responses. A student’s final score will combine the scores from both parts.

If you have questions about the new state tests, contact your child’s teacher.
