New Richmond's Plea to State Legislators, and How You Can Help

October 18, 2016

Attention New Richmond Community:

We would like to update you on the latest developments with NREVSD’s efforts to propose necessary changes to regulations placed on our students and teachers.

In a recent letter to Ohio Superintendent Paolo DeMaria, our district and other members of the Greater Cincinnati School Advocacy Network shared key points that were agreed upon during the local ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) community meetings and discussions around the best practices for our students. This will undoubtedly be the most important piece of school legislation in the next decade.

Key Points of our letter to Ohio Superintendent Paola DeMaria include:

  • The State of Ohio should adhere to requirements set forth in the Federal ESSA legislation, and not add additional assessments for Ohio students.

  • The removal of End of Course exams. We strongly believe that the administration of the ACT/SAT is much more relevant to our students and provides a more comprehensive and useful tool for our families.

  • The State of Ohio must provide results in a timelier manner. Individual assessment results must be made available to enhance programs, not to rank and grade districts.

  • Finally, we strongly recommend the elimination of the A-F grading of school buildings and districts on the Local Report Card. ESSA requires an accountability system, however, the rating of schools and districts with a grade is not part of this requirement. Numerous reports have found that the grades and rankings assigned to districts by the State of Ohio closely mirror the socio-economic demographics of each district.

For your convenience, we have attached a sample letter and the contact info for you to easily access our legislators.
