District G.A.T.E.S. students study geometry

New Richmond Exempted Village School District’s first quarter of G.A.T.E.S. program focused on the math topic of geometry.

Students learned about the relationship of perimeter to area and how to scale using a ratio.  They also studied three-sided and four-sided polygons and were exposed to specific vocabulary involving triangles and quadrilaterals and included these in geometric mazes.

“Not only did they create individual mazes, but they connected their learning to a real-world scenario,” said Rachel R. Reynolds,  NREVSD gifted coordinator and G.A.T.E.S. teacher.

“For our end-of-course field trip, we visited Shaw Farms in Milford and went through a 12-acre corn maze and we were also treated to a tractor ride and heard an explanation of how their mazes have changed over the years through the use of technology.”
