New Richmond High School

December 1, 2016

Dear NRHS Students & Parents/Guardians:

Welcome to the end of the first semester at New Richmond High School! We wanted to provide you with information regarding our First Semester Exam Schedule, which will take place from Friday, December 16th - Wednesday, December 21st, and how that schedule is structured in regards to semester exams, exam exemptions, and expectations for student attendance. Please note that our school day will end at 1:00 p.m. for all students on Monday, December 19th through Wednesday, December 21st. Students may be dismissed at this time if they have their own transportation; school busing will remain on the regular schedule. The Building Leadership Team has developed an Exam Exemption Policy approved by the NREVSD Board of Education which states the following:

Students may qualify for an exam/Learning Period/AP Enrichment exemption, per semester, based on set criteria. Students must take exams in all core areas (English, math, science, social studies) and in foreign language. Students may exempt up to 3 periods, in elective areas only, if the follow criteria are met:

1. An “A” average for both quarters in the semester.

2. No unexcused absences or tardies during the semester.

3. Teacher verification of grades.

4. Student cannot have a quarter grade of “F” in any course to be excused from Learning Period/AP Enrichment.

If your child meets this criteria, then your child will bring home an application for your signature. The parent/guardian signed application for an exam exemption will serve as permission for your student to have an “exempted” absence in the classes for which they have earned an exam exemption. If a student has earned an exam exemption pursuant to our policy, the signed form is the note of permission allowing the student to leave campus. Students will be required to sign in/out in the main office.

If an exam exemption is not earned, the expectation is that the student will be in attendance in all of his/her classes during the scheduled exam time. We will continue to follow the normal attendance procedures in effect for the entire school year for those students who have not earned an exam exemption.

The following are all possible scenarios that we feel will help you in knowing when your child would have an “exempted” absence during first semester exams. If your child is exempt from an exam and cannot be picked up from school, then your child may remain at school and will be able to work on studying for all other exams that he/she has to take. School transportation will remain on the regular busing schedule.

Based on our posted First Semester Exam Schedule, we will refer to exams as the 1st exam of the day and the 2nd exam of the day in our scenarios below for Monday, December 19th - Wednesday, December 21st:

  • Scenario A: 1st Exam of the Day EXEMPT, Lunch, 2nd Exam of the Day EXEMPT

  • Student not required to attend school.

  • Scenario B: 1st Exam of the Day NOT EXEMPT, Lunch, 2nd Exam of the Day EXEMPT

  • Student can leave campus at the end of the 1st exam period; parent signed Application for Exam Exemption is the note of permission to leave; student is required to sign out through the main office.

  • Scenario C: 1st Exam of the Day EXEMPT, Lunch, 2nd Exam of the Day NOT EXEMPT

  • Student will arrive on campus in time to take the 2nd exam; parent signed Application for Exam Exemption is the note allowing late arrival; student is required to sign in through the main office.

  • Scenario D: Student NOT EXEMPT from any exams

  • Student is expected to attend all class periods; student late arrival to school will require sign in through the main office; student leaving school will require sign out through the main office.

REMINDER: This form will be sent home with your student.
