The Lions Sports Hall of Fame Inducts 4 New Members

On February 3rd, the New Richmond Sports Hall of Fame inducted in it's newest members: Matt Ramsey ('97), Doug Phillips ('84), Gary Henderson ('83), and Mike Holcomb ('02).

On February 3rd, the New Richmond Sports Hall of Fame inducted in it's newest members: Matt Ramsey ('97), Doug Phillips ('84), Gary Henderson ('83), and Mike Holcomb ('02).
 
Matt Ramsey 
Class of 1997 Inducted 2019 
Matt Ramsey graduated from NRHS in 1997 and played football for four years, track and field for four years, and basketball for three years. Football and track were where Matt excelled. In football, Matt led the offense in rushing yards, was the City Leader in return yardage and was selected as the team “Most Valuable Player” as a junior. One of Matt’s most outstanding accomplishments came during his sophomore year, when he had a kickoff return of 99 yards against Loveland, winning the game as time expired after Loveland had just scored and kicked off with just a few seconds left. That same year, Matt held a school record for yards returned at 597. His junior year, Matt’s record was 140 points, 23 touchdowns, 18 rushing attempts, and 1404 rushing yardage. As a senior, Matt led the team in rushing, was the team’s “Most Valuable Player”, received the coveted “Lion Award”, and was selected to the 1st Team SBAAC All-Star Team. In Matt’s high school career for football, he accumulated the following records: 5th with Most Carries (326), 5th with Most Yardage (2250), 4th with Touchdowns (34), and 5th with Points (212). In the spring, Matt’s accomplishments were in track. Matt was an exceptional sprinter and excelled in the events in which he was selected. Matt always stepped up for the challenge. Matt was a member of the 4x400 Relay team in 1997 that set a school record of 3:25.17 and moved on to be a State Qualifier. He was also a member of the 4x100 Relay team that set a school record of 44.21. Matt was also selected as NRHS “Most Valuable Sprinter” and SBAAC 1st Team All-Star. In 1996, Matt was selected by the league coaches as the “Most Valuable Athlete” for Football and “Most Valuable Track Man”. 

Douglas Phillips
Class of 1984 Inducted 2019 
The accomplishments, honors, and awards that Doug Phillips achieved as a student at NRHS are affirmation of his qualifications for the NRHS Athletic Hall of Fame. Doug graduated third in his class in 1984, and as a senior, his classmates chose him as the “Outstanding Male Student” and the Athletic Department awarded him the “Outstanding Student Athlete”. In 1984, he was the winner of the Kiwanis Club “Outstanding Student Award” and named the “Outstanding Physics Student”. His athletic career included participation in soccer, basketball, baseball, and tennis. In soccer, Doug was a 4-year starter on the varsity boys soccer team as a center forward and goalie. As a junior, Doug was selected to the CCL 1st Team All-Star Team. As a senior, Doug was again selected to the CCL 1st Team All-Star Team, was captain of his team, and voted Most Valuable Player. Doug scored 41 goals over the course of his career, which at that time was a school record. In 1984, he was ranked 3rd in the Cincinnati area in goals scored (24); another school record. In basketball, Doug played Freshmen Basketball, JV Basketball, and then 2 years as a member of the Varsity Basketball Team. In 1983, Doug was named to the CCL 2nd Team All-Stars as a junior. As a senior, Doug was selected to be Co-Captain and the “Most Valuable Player” on a team that went on to be the Sectional Champions. Doug was very instrumental in the team’s 17-6 record. Doug averaged 18.9 points per game, 11.3 rebounds per game, and had a field goal percentage of 58% his senior year. Doug was named to the CCL 1st Team All-Stars, the Cincinnati Post 2nd team All-City Basketball Team, and the 2nd Team All-District Team as a senior as well. Doug was a part of the NRHS baseball program in 1981 and 1982 as a member of the Junior Varsity Team. In 1983 and 1984, Doug played for the NRHS Tennis Team as a #1 Singles player. As a senior, he was selected as co-captain and voted to the CCL 1st Team All-Stars. Upon graduation, Doug received a B.A. degree in Economics from Williams College and then went on to attend Duke University School of Law where he graduated in 1991. He is currently lead corporate and transactional lawyer for WarnerMedia. 

Gary Henderson 
Class of 1983 Inducted 2019 
Gary Henderson, a 1983 graduate from NRHS, was an outstanding athlete whose accomplishments are worthy of recognition in the NRHS Athletic Hall of Fame. Gary played baseball and football for 4 years and basketball for 2 years. One of the many highlights of Gary’s football career came his senior year, when he led the Lions to a 10-0 record as the starting quarterback. Also as a senior, he was named to the CCL first team all-stars as an outstanding punter. During his high school athletic career, baseball is where Gary really excelled as an athlete. In his junior year, he was named to the 1st team CCL Baseball all-stars, as well as the All-City Baseball 1st team all-stars. That same year, Gary led his team in Batting Average (.506), Hits (40), Runs (23), Doubles (13), Triples (3), Homeruns (6), RBI’s (31) and on the mound, Gary had team highs of 62.6 Innings Pitched and an ERA of 1.11. In his senior year, Gary led his team in Batting Average (.500), Hits (38), Runs (25), Triples (2), Homeruns (12), and RBI’s (33), and on the mound, he led in Innings Pitched (54.6), Strikeouts (72), Wins (6), and ERA (1.02). That same year, Gary was named NRHS MVP and named to the OHSAA All-State team. In total, during his high school career, Gary had a Batting Average of .494, 18 Home Runs, 64 RBI’s, 18 Doubles, 5 Triples, and 160 Total Bases. At the end of his high school career, his ranking in the Overall Records were as follows: 2nd in Batting Average with a .494 average, 3rd in Doubles with 18, 3rd in Triples with 5, 2nd in Home Runs with 18, 8th in RBI’s with 64, and 3rd in Total Bases with 160. On the mound, Gary placed 7th in Innings Pitched with 111, 1st in ERA’s with 1.07, 5th in Strikeouts with 148, and 3rd in Strikeouts per 7 innings with 9.3. After graduation, Gary attended Columbia State Junior College, where as a freshman, he batted .508 and placed 8th in the nation on the collegiate level. 

Mike Holcomb 
Class of 2002 Inducted 2019 
Mike Holcomb graduated in 2002 as a three-sport athlete with 11 varsity letters. Maybe more impressive than his accomplishments in athletics were his academic successes. With a 4.0 gpa and perfect attendance for four years, Mike proved that he was “well-rounded”. He served on the Student Council and the National Honor Society and was voted “Best All Around” by his peers in his senior year. In athletics, Mike excelled in whatever sport he played. In the fall, he played football for four years and was on varsity for three years. As a player on the football team, Mike was instrumental in his team making the State Playoffs in 1999, 2000, 2001. The 2000 and 2001 teams went undefeated in the regular season and Mike was a starter and key factor to those successes. In 2001, Mike was named to the 1st Team All District Team. Mike still is tied for the school record with two touchdown passes caught in a game, doing it twice. In the winter, Mike turned his attention to wrestling, a sport in which he excelled for four years. A four year varsity wrestler, Mike was named the team “Rookie of the Year” in 1999, received the “Coach’s Award” in 2001 and 2002, and in his senior year, received the Four Year Award for his contribution to the wrestling program at New Richmond. In 2002, Mike was third in “All Time Wins” with 103. He was a 2nd team SBAAC All-Star as a Sophomore and a 1st Team SBAAC All-Star as a junior. He was a three-time District Qualifier in 2000, 2001, 2002 and a State Qualifier in 2002. He was team captain in 2002 and made the Academic All-Ohio Team in 2002. In the spring, Mike turned his attention to baseball and as in all other things, he excelled. He was a four year varsity letterman in baseball, and during his four years, he accomplished many records. He was the team’s top hitter in 2000 and 2001, had the most RBIs in 2002, and broke the All-Time Hit Record with 125. Mike is at the top in the triples record with 13, tied for 4th with the most home runs with 10 and 6th in most stolen bases with 31. Mike was 1st in RBI’s with 111, 1st in total bases with 201, 2nd most walks with 45, 3rd in batting average at .472, 1st in runs with 100, 4th in doubles with 20, and was a two time SBAAC Player of the Year and three-time SBAAC 1st Team All-Star. Mike was also named to the 1st Team All-Cincinnati for baseball. After graduation, Mike continued to distinguish himself by serving his country in the United States Marine Corps, serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Mike has continued his success with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. He now owns and operates his own business.
