History focus of 3rd, 8th grade Field Trips

2021 outdoor field trip to historic New RichmondWith the drop in COVID-19 cases and the change in pandemic-related state protocols, field trips are once again possible.

Thanks to a collaboration between New Richmond Schools, the New Richmond Ohio Business Association, and the New Richmond Historical Society, field trips with a focus on local history are already scheduled for students in grades three and eight.

This is the second such field trip for eighth-graders. Last May, NRMS eighth-graders participated in a tour of Historic New Richmond. They visited several historic sites and learned about the role the village played in the Underground Railroad. This year’s field trip will be similar, but will hopefully have better weather. Last year it rained so plans were modified slightly.

Third-graders will have the opportunity to visit the Rankin House in Ripley, Ohio. The museum there was home to abolitionist and Presbyterian minister John Rankin. Students will also visit the Point Pleasant birthplace of former Union General and U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant.

“We want to make sure that our students have a connection and understanding of local history before they leave our schools,” Superintendent Tracey Miller said. “It’s important.”

Along those lines, we want to express our gratitude to Donna Prues. She is a  New Richmond resident, and a member of the district’s business committee and of the village historical society.

“She’s been phenomenal getting these tours ready to go,” Mr. Miller said. “We could not replace what she does. So a big thank you to her and all she does to pull these field trips off.”
