Mental health initiative updates, Traversa Ride360 launch highlight April meeting

Updates on three crucial programs highlighted the April regular meeting of the New Richmond Exempted Village School District Board of Education.

Superintendent Tracey Miller provided the board with an update on the launch of Traversa Ride360, a program that will allow parents to keep track of their child(ren)’s bus in real time.

A pilot program consisting of three elementary school routes began earlier this month. Those students were provided with ID badges to scan upon entering and exiting the school bus, giving parents and guardians additional peace of mind when it comes to transportation to and from school.

“I think this will be the gold standard for safety and security for our kids and our parents,” Mr. Miller said. “Our long-term plan is to bring this to every kid in the district.”

More uses are planned for the badges in the future. For now, more information on the program can be found on the Transportation Department webpage.

Throughout the school year, New Richmond Exempted Village School district has placed an emphasis on the mental well-being of staff, students and caregivers in the district.

“It’s become a huge initiative in our district this year,” Mr. Miller said. “All our buildings are fully invested.”

Highlighting resources available to community members is a crucial step in that process. In New Richmond, the ‘Stay Safe, Speak Up’ app allows users to submit written reports or phone calls that are immediately transmitted to relevant administrators and staff members in the district.

Additionally, the community resource guide lists dozens of resources throughout the area for families in need. You can view the community resource guide here.

New math curriculum selection nearing finalization

A year-long process to revise the district’s math curriculum is nearing a conclusion, according to Director of Curriculum and Technology Dr. Jill Hollandsworth.

The secondary committee has made their decision, narrowing down a list of nine programs to one. The elementary committee is currently deciding between two programs and, as part of their process, sent a small group of teachers to other schools in the area to learn more about each one.

“The elementary committee sent six representatives to view the programs they’re considering in action with live students in live classrooms in two different districts,” Dr. Hollandsworth said. “They also had the opportunity to get feedback on those programs from teachers in the districts.”

Both groups will make their recommendations to the Board of Education at the May 15 meeting.
