Did you hear? All New Richmond EVSD students are receiving free breakfasts/lunches thanks to the extension of the summer meal program through the US Department of Agriculture.

The USDA is extending eligibility for free meals to all students as the country recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

NREVSD has long participted in the summer meal program, according to Food Service Director Brenda Young.

"We are extremely grateful the program was extended into the school year. In a typical school year, upwards of 40 percent of our students receive free or reduced priced breakfast and/or lunch. Because of COVID-19, we fear many in our community might be experiencing financial hardship and could even be experiencing some level of food insecurity. The free meals for students could be a big help to some of our families," she said.

Even though the current program provides free breakfasts/lunches to all students, the program will eventually end.

"We hope that doesn’t occur until Dec. 31, but the USDA cautioned that it could end sooner if it runs out of funds," Mrs. Young said.

Because of this, families who qualify or believe they qualify for the free or reduced breakfast/lunch program are encouraged to get their applications in now.
