Locust Corner Elementary students pose with administrators and board members at the March meeting

SBHC construction agreement awarded

NREVSD entered into an agreement with Kramer and Feldman, Inc. at the March board meeting to provide construction services for the district’s creation of a school-based health center at New Richmond Middle School.

The district and Children’s Hospital collaborated on the creation of the clinic, which will serve children of all ages throughout the community. Construction is expected to begin sometime in April.

In addition, NREVSD will remodel the current main office at New Richmond High School to create an Ohio Means Jobs suite on-campus.

Both projects were funded by the Appalachian Community Grant Program. NREVSD received $711,000 from the state of Ohio for this project.

Handbook changes emphasize mental health supports, harassment policies
The 2025-2026 handbooks were given a first reading at the March Board of Education meeting.

Both handbooks, primary and secondary, include an increased emphasis on racial and ethnic slurs. NREVSD is committed to creating a safe, respectful and inclusive learning environment for all students. As such, using derogatory language is strictly prohibited and will not be tolerated.

The new section in the handbook explicitly details what is considered a violation of school policy and the consequences for violation. Students and staff are asked to immediately report any incidents for investigation.

Mental health and wellness support resources were added to the elementary handbook. A list of support options for students as well as tips on when to reach out for assistance are included.

Both handbooks are up for second reading and approval at the April board meeting

Beth Webster Leading Lion awards winners honored
Two Locust Corner Elementary students earned the Beth Webster Leading Lion award for the month of March.

Jaxson Dale and Wesley Jones, both fifth-grade students, earned this month’s honor for the characteristics they display in and out of the classroom.

“These students exemplify determination, perseverance and kindness,” Principal Joe Roach said. “[They have an] unwavering dedication to learning and their positive impact on our school community.”

Jaxson Dale’s commitment to learning is one Mr. Roach highlighted during the board meeting.

“Jaxson brings energy and thoughtfulness to every classroom discussion,” Mr. Roach said. “He always strives to do his best. Just the other day he chose to work on his ELA assignment during recess because he wanted it to be the best it could be.”

Wesley Jones has overcome many challenges but still keeps a positive attitude throughout his time at LCE.

“He’s the very definition of perseverance,” Mr. Roach said. “He’s faced challenges but you would never know. He never lets obstacles discourage him. His interactions with others are always uplifting.”

Policy/calendar updates
A host of policies and updates to the 2024-2025 calendar were officially approved at the March meeting.

The policies were given a first reading in February. Most changes involved minor technical changes with two highlighted areas of focus being religious expression days and cell phone usage. A summary of the policies can be found here.

Additionally, the 2024-2025 school calendar was adjusted to give students a two-hour early release on the last day of school Thursday, May 22. The updated calendar for this school year can be found here.

The 2025-2026 school calendar discussed in February was also approved, but further revisions may be needed. A draft version of the calendar may be viewed here.
