Academic changes for 2023-2024 school year highlight May Board of Education meeting

A year-long process to revise the New Richmond Exempted Village School District’s math curriculum took one step closer to completion at the May Board of Education meeting.

Dr. Jill Hollandsworth recommended the adoption of two math programs to the board: Bridges (K-5) and enVision (grades 7-12). Both programs mark substantial shifts from previous math curriculums in the district.

“We began our first meeting of the year with ‘What do we want our math classes to feel like, and to sound like and to look like?” Dr. Hollandsworth said. “It was a chance to challenge our own ideas.”

Additionally, new handbooks were presented to the board for first reading at the May meeting. The most substantial changes came at the elementary levels with regards to smart watches, which will now be treated as cell phones if they are causing disruptions.

A new coaches handbook was also presented to the board for the first time. The 16-page document compiles coaching expectations, district policy and other pertinent information into one convenient resource.

Five-year forecast update shared

NREVSD Treasurer Matthew Prichard shared the spring update of the district’s five-year forecast with the board of education on May 15.

One large change made a positive impact on future projections. The previous forecast, shared with the board in November, did not include two $1.4 million payments from the state to districts who relied on power plant revenue.

That funding was not guaranteed for the next two years and wasn’t reflected in the November presentation. Prichard said that language is in fact present in the next state budget and those payments will continue for the next two years.
