UPDATED Information about Incident at Monroe Elementary

8/17/2016

To the New Richmond Community:

I would like to provide some additional clarity to questions you might have about the arrest of a woman with a firearm at Monroe Elementary.

· She has been charged with possession of a weapon while under disability.

· She has also been charged with conveyance of a firearm.

· She is currently incarcerated without bond and is scheduled for arraignment this morning in Batavia.

· The firearm she possessed was in a box and was never taken out of the box. The firearm was unloaded but in the box was some ammunition.

· She exhibited no obvious intent to harm anyone.

· She never made it into the building.

· She does not have any children attending New Richmond EVSD.

· She never threatened a teacher or staff member.

· She was not recently rejected for employment.

· We will be asking the Prosecutor's office to ask the judge to keep her off of school property in the future.

The Board of Education recently approved the presence of a Sheriff's Deputy on our campuses on a rotating, random basis. The Sheriff's Department will also provide a deputy on the first day of school for Monroe Elementary.

We will continue to practice our ALICE drills in all NREVSD schools to prepare our students for incidents that require evading and countering hostile threats.

I commend the staff of Monroe Elementary and the Clermont County Sheriff's Department for dealing with this situation yesterday quickly and professionally.
