Protect Yourself Online

With the Internet/Cloud security hack being all over the news lately it's a great time to mention some quick tips on how you can better protect yourself online.

• Use a STRONG password. Something complex that includes numbers, upper/lower case letters and more. Avoid using anything that's easy to guess such as names of children/pets, birthdays, etc.

• Beware of PHISHING Emails. These are fake Email messages that ask you for personal information that appear to be from a legitimate source such as your Bank, Facebook, Email Provider, etc. Treat these Emails the same way you would if a stranger phoned you directly and asked you the same questions. Be very careful with giving out any type of personal information, including usernames and passwords.

• Avoid using Open/Public Wi-Fi that doesn’t require a password or ‘Network Key’ to join. These types of wireless networks are extremely vulnerable and pass your data along without any security (encryption).

• Password Protect your Smartphones, Tablets, etc. If your device is lost or stolen the person who then has your device will most likely have access to many of your accounts and other personal information.

• Enable Two-Factor authentication. Most Email, Banks and Social Networking services are now offering this level of security. The first time you login to a service from a new computer or device, the service will send a text message to your phone with a random set of numbers or letters. You'll then need to enter that information in as well to access your content and information. Very secure system.
